Leuconychia or "white nail" is an abnormal whiteness of the nails, either in total, partial or striate forms. It may occur spontaneously or after minor trauma. Leuconychia is the most common nails discoloration, may be congenital or acquired. Leuconychia changes the color of your nails. The most common signs and symptoms of Leukonychia include camptodactyly, hammer toes, gingivitis, hyperkeratosis, abnormal colored nails, deafness, sensorineural, skin cysts, skin syndactyly of fingers, joint contractures and arthrogryposis. Leuconychia is not unique to liver but can also occur with renal failure, fungal infection, lymphoma or can be congenital. There is no effective treatment for Leukonychia although reducing minor injury to the nails prevents the white marks and spots that will gradually disappear as the nail grows outward from the matrix with the nail plate and eventually disappear. It may be caused by systemic diseases such as hypoalbuminemia or liver abnormality. It may be congenital or acquired.
Causes of Leuconychia
The common causes of Leuconychia include the following:
- Local trauma.
- Exposure to extreme cold.
- Disturbed Nutrition.
- Hepatic Cirrhosis.
- Vitamin deficiency can cause a loss of luster or brittle nails.
- Psychogenic Stresses.
Symptoms of Leuconychia

- Abnormal colored nails.
- Camptodactyly.
- Skin syndactyly of fingers.
- Skin cysts.
- Joint contractures and arthrogryposis.
Treatment of Leuconychia

- Leuconychia may be no treatment is required as the spots will grow out with the nail plate.
- Green leafy vegetables, whole grains, nuts and should be consumed in daily routine so that there is no deficiency of zinc in your body - which are associated with the appearance of white spots.
