Contrary to what is commonly believed, these are not related to or due to calcium deficiency. The most common cause of white spots is a minor injury to the matrix, i.e., the nail manufacturing unit. Sometimes it could be due to a skin disease affecting the adjacent skin or an early sign of a fungal infection. By and large the spots are harmless and tend to disappear in a few months.
