Hair care and trouble: Your complete guide to hair care

Welcome to Beauty Makeup Tip's Hair Care Section

Hair is a marvellous structural entity which serves different functions on different parts of the body The hair on the scalp are meant to provide a buffer zone and protect the vital contents of the head; the hairs constituting the eyebrows, the eyelashes, the moustache, and those inside the nostrils act as filters against flying particles; the hairs in the axillae (annpits) are meant to protect from friction caused between two apposing skin surfaces and are meant to act in the same way as a ball-bearing does in a machine. The hair on the private parts help in sexual arousal, and the hair on the body is meant for conservation of body heat and protection from cold. In addition, the hairs act as sensory organs and serve the sensation of touch on the skin. In humans however, the only function of the hair is decorative. Each person therefore, wants to have the right amount of hair at the right places. Less or too much hair or hair at the wrong places pose a problem.

Since time immemorial, hair has been revered and admired, and considered a key element of a woman's beauty. It is an expression of one's personality. Women have bobbed, crimped, feathered and pixied their hair, in addition to colouring and streaking it many different shades! Along with an expensive outfit and good skin, well-groomed hair completes the picture.

Similar to your eyes and skin, you inherit the characteristics of your hair, i.e., colour, texture, thickness, type, etc.,from your parents. Hair follicles develop before birth. The average scalp contains 80,000 to 1,20,000 hair follicles. This number is determined genetically, and new hair follicles do not form after birth. The only live element of the hair is the hair root (papilla), found deep down in the scalp. As soon as the cells that make up hair are produced, they die and harden to form the hair shaft. The hair shaft is composed of cells filled with a protein called keratin. Hair grows in cycles-a growth phase followed by a resting phase. The length of the growth cycle determines how long your hair will ever grow-assuming you never cut it, of course. And since your growth cycle is determined genetically, there is nothing you can do about it.

Hair on your scalp has growing cycles that vary from two to six years, during which hair grows at about 1/3 to 1/2 inch per month. After growing, each hair goes into a resting phase, which can last from two to four months. During the resting phase, the hair stops growing and is eventually shed.

Because the length of the growing cycle can vary so much, there is considerable variation in how long different individuals hair will grow. Only people with an extremely long growing cycle will ever have hair that reaches below the waist. A person with a minimum hair growth cycle can only hope for hair up to about 12 inches in length.

The shape of the hair in cross section determines how curly or straight hair is. The rounder the cross-section, the straighter it is. The more oval or ribbon like the shape, the curlier the hair. The colour of hair is determined by special cells in the hair root called melanocytes. Melanin makes hair brown-black in colour while pheomelanin gives hair yellow or red colour. The colour of your hair is also determined gentically. When the colour cells stop producing colour, hair turns white or grey. Your genes also determine the age at which this happens. Some people who start greying at an early age do respond to treatment which may help to repigment their hair.

It is important to take good care of your hair, even if it has never been processed or coloured. It is after all your crowning glory! The key is to treat your hair the same wayyou treat your skin. You need to cleanse and moisturize (condition it) when required, and occasionally give it that extra pampering to keep it looking great.

The goal of basic hair care is to keep hair dean and minimize damage. And do not forget: always be gentle with your hair; never abuse it.
