Scabies is one of the commonest skin diseases. It is caused by a tiny parasite which lives on human beings only. It is transmitted from one individual to another during close contact, especially among those who live in the same household. Thus, the infection is easily transmitted between the husband and the wife, the parents and the children, from one child to the other, between a servant and the children, and among the children themselves du(ing play and at school, and so on. The spread of infection is particularly common when a large number of people are gathered together, as during religious congregations and marriages and especially if the hygienic conditions are poor as during war, and natural calamities.
The disease is mare camman in individuals with poor hygiene but peaple with fairly clean habits are also. occa- sionally involved, especially when the conditians are favaurable. Thus, no. individual should cansider himself unvulnerable to develop scabies. It is a common practice among dermatologists to consider any eruptian of itchy papules of short duratian, present all over the body except the face, to.be scabies unless proved otherwise.
